BOOKSTORE-IES

Bookstore-ies are anecdotes and short essays about life in the used-and-rare bookshop I co-own in Columbus, Ohio . These bookstore-ies, from 2 to 20 pages in length, are often humorous, sometimes touching, sometimes outrageous. A wild-eyed treasure hunter believes he owns a biography of Ulysses Grant signed by Grant himself. A woman selling her deceased father's books can't quite part with the AA title that transformed the family's life. The stories include tales of regulars like Pigwoman and Spymaster Rick and Very Weird Michael, and also of more transient customers like the traveling circus people and the occasional thief. My forty-plus years behind the counters of 14 bookstores have blessed me with what Jimmy Buffett describes as a novelist's eye and a bartender's ear for the stories and characters that come through the door.

The late, great Chicago bookstore owner Stuart Brent wrote, "The most important thing was not the exchange of dollars for merchandise, but the conversation." And those conversations can lead to great bookstore-ies.

As we add stories we will highlight new ones with an * (asterisk) by them. I hope you enjoy them, and let me know what you think about them.
